APhA-ASP

American Pharmacist Association – Academy of Student Pharmacists

APhA is a national umbrella organization for the pharmacy profession. Thousands of student pharmacists across the nation, through their respective school’s chapters, take part in patient care projects, gain leadership experience, and advocate for their future in the pharmacy profession. If you’re a student pharmacist, APhA has something for you.

APhA also hosts many opportunities to take on leadership roles to help you develop personally and professionally. From patient care coordinators, to state and national liaisons and delegates, APhA has the most opportunities to take up responsibilities and be part of the team.

APhA stands as a unifying voice for pharmacists, advocating for laws and legislation for our profession. As a chapter we also participate and do our part, both on the national and state level through the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association.

SSHP

SSHP

American Society of Health System Pharmacists

The Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists (SSHP) is a professional association that represents student pharmacists who intend to practice in hospitals, health maintenance organizations, long-term care facilities, home infusion, and in various other clinical roles of the health care system. The organization includes students at the local (SSHP), state (PSHP), and national (ASHP) levels by providing programs and resources concerned with career opportunities, residencies, and the ever expanding role of clinical pharmacists as part of the health care team.  The organization has developed close ties with the Northwestern Chapter of PSHP (NWPSHP), allowing students to network and receive mentoring from area pharmacists.  Monthly meetings are held at LECOM and Student Chapter members are also invited to attend the monthly NWPSHP meetings.  Student Chapter members are strongly encouraged to join either one of the parent organizations, PSHP or ASHP.  This affords the opportunity to participate in events at the state or national level.  The organization is involved in many community service projects, including poison prevention programs for children. The club participates in monthly NWPSHP meetings at local restaurants and in the annual summer picnic, providing an opportunity to socialize with area pharmacists.

SCCP

SCCP

Student College of Clinical Pharmacy

SCCP was founded in 1979 and the student chapter at LECOM started in 2014. Student chapter members should expect to participate in clinical based community service and health fairs. The club will do its best to meet each month accompanied by a clinical pharmacist in the area to talk about their responsibilities and daily routine. Many of these pharmacists will be associated with LECOM in some way. The goal is to educate the students about clinical pharmacy and the many career opportunities it entails, as much as possible.

ASCP

ASCP

American Society of Consulting Pharmacists

ASCP works with the elderly population of Erie to improve their medication adherence and to give students the opportunity to practice interacting with this population. ASCP does activities with the residents at Millcreek Manor.  Furthermore, we raise awareness about Alzheimer’s through participation and volunteer work with the Erie Alzheimer’s Walk.  Finally, ASCP gives the opportunity to learn the important role that geriatric pharmacists have in a nursing home setting and their impact on the lives of the elderly.  In doing so, we hope to complete the mission of ASCP by becoming pharmacists who provide higher quality of care for the older person by ensuring appropriate use of medication.

AAPP

AAPP

The LECOM chapter for The American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists promotes awareness of mental illness and neurologic disorders in order to provide optimal patient care. AAPP provides students with the opportunity to have a positive impact on the mental health and neurologic community. Student pharmacist will gain more specialized knowledge in this area of pharmacy and therefore will contribute to providing safe and effective treatment as well as positive outcomes to our patients as future pharmacists. A membership in AAPP gives students the ability to participate in leadership roles, community service, fundraising activities, and an opportunity to learn from guest speakers as well as other experts within the community.

The Academic Honor Society in Pharmacy

The Rho Chi Society, Pharmacy’s academic honor society, encourages and recognizes excellence in intellectual achievement and fosters fellowship among its members. Further, the Society encourages high standards of conduct and character, and advocates critical inquiry in all aspects of pharmacy.  Membership in the Rho Chi Society is a privilege accorded to the very few who distinguish themselves by their academic and professional achievements and who aspire to the mission and vision of the Society.  The honor society thus has two aims: (1) it recognizes and rewards outstanding scholarly attainment, and (2) it thereby encourages and stimulates outstanding scholarship and service.  Candidates are eligible for membership if they are in the top 20% of their class AND have attained a GPA of 3.0 or higher after completion of either the first or second year of didactic coursework.

Phi Lambda Sigma – National Pharmacy Leadership Society

The purpose of Phi Lambda Sigma, also known as National Pharmacy Leadership Society, is to promote the development of leadership qualities, especially among pharmacy students. By peer recognition, the Society encourages participation in all pharmacy activities. Since membership crosses fraternal and organizational lines, the Society does not compete with other pharmacy organizations.

Phi Lambda Sigma honors leadership. Members are selected by peer recognition. No greater honor can be bestowed upon an individual than to be recognized as a leader by one’s peers. Such recognition instills and enhances self-confidence, encourages the less active student to a more active role and promotes greater effort toward the advancement of pharmacy.
